AFTERCARE
Cleaning & looking after your new tattoo in the following weeks after you leave the studio is a very important part of the healing process & essential for you tattoo to look it’s best for the rest of your life.
Your artist will wrap your new tattoo before you leave the studio,
leave this wrap on for between 3-5 hours.
During this time try to rest your tattoo as much as possible.
Especially if your new tattoo is on your legs, put your feet up to take the pressure off.
After this time, wash your hands & remove the wrap (always wash your hands before touching your new tattoo)
You can wash your tattoo under clean running water, like in the shower or in the sink but do not submerge it under water.
No baths, hot tubs, swimming in fresh water, pools or the sea, surfing etc. for 2 weeks after getting your tattoo because of bacteria in the water & water logging the skin can be detrimental.
We recommend using a very gentle soap, the original Dove body wash is perfect.
Lather up the body wash in your hands then with medium pressure wash over the tattoo & rinse off with the shower water.
Repeat this process 5-6 times in the shower, this washes out all of the plasma in the tattoo & greatly helps in eliminating any scabbing.
After your shower do not dry your tattoo with your regular towel, because of lint & bacteria.
Dab the excess water off your tattoo with a paper towel or toilet paper.
Leave it to air dry for around 30 minutes before putting on any aftercare balm.
This will give the water trapped in the tattoo time to evaporate, allowing the balm to be absorbed straight into the tattoo & not just sit on top of waterlogged skin.
Repeat this washing process twice a day (shower in the morning & again at night) for the next 3 days, after that the skin will have started to heal enough that washing the tattoo once per shower should be fine.
We have an aftercare balm in the shop that is made for specifically healing tattoos, it is made from all natural oils & is high in E & all the B vitamins, which is what the skin cells need to regenerate.
You are welcome to use other aftercare balms with similar healing properties.
We do not recommend you use products like Vaseline or Bepanthen, these products do not have any healing properties & are just a barrier for stopping chafing.
After air drying your freshly washed tattoo for 30 minutes, wash your hands before applying any aftercare balm.
Use a very small amount of balm, if you put on too much your new tattoo can not breathe.
Dot the aftercare balm around the tattoo then lightly massage it in.
If you need to get more balm out of the pot, use a different, clean finger so you don’t contaminate the balm.
You just want a very fine layer of balm with a slight shine on the tattoo, like you would with lip balm.
You will want to cover your tattoos the first night when you go to bed as this is the time it will be most likely to weep again.
The next day & night you can wrap your tattoo if you think it needs it but it is good to let it breathe.
Do not pick or scratch your tattoo.
We recommended having clean sheets on your bed & using a clean fresh towel.
Wear clean lightweight loose clothing that doesn’t rub on the tattoo.
Be careful not to have shoes, bra straps, belts, bags etc rubbing on the tattoo.
Always wear clean clothing, not the same item over multiple days.
Cover your tattoo if you are going somewhere dusty.
Avoid activities where you are likely to excessively sweat, bump or hit the new tattoos
Keep your fresh tattoo out of direct sunlight for the first 2 weeks.
After that use sunscreen or keep it covered whenever going in the sun.
The sun’s UV light is what is responsible for tattoos fading & going blurry.
